The Dance of the Awkward

Gary stared at his phone, jaw clenched, as the TikTok dance trend blared through his headphones. The clip showed a neon-clad influencer doing a series of fluid spins, all while a dog in a tiny sweater barked in sync. Gary had 24 hours to replicate it. He turned on the track—”Bop It!” by some guy named DJ Snaps—and began. His first spin ended with him face-planting into a cereal box. “Not today, Mr. Kix,” he muttered, wiping marshmallow crumbs off his face. The dog, Sir Barksalot, watched from the couch, tail wagging like a metronome. Gary tried again. This time, he spun so hard he knocked over a lamp. The dog howled in approval. “You’re a menace,” Gary said, but he filmed it anyway. He uploaded the clip at 3 a.m., captioning it “When you try to trend but the dog has other plans.” By noon, it had 10 million views. Comments flooded in: “This is the new trend!” “Teach me your dog’s moves!” Gary stared at his phone, then at Sir Barksalot, who was now doing a solo spin atop the fridge. “You’re a legend,” Gary whispered. The dog barked once, as if to say, “Dance or die.”
